2000 Guineas 2026

The opening British Classic of the 2026 season, the 2000 Guineas, was run over the straight mile of the Rowley Mile Course at Newmarket on Saturday, May 2nd, 2026. Fourteen colts went to post on good-to-firm ground and Gstaad trained by Aidan O’Brien and ridden by Ryan Moore and Distant Storm trained by Charlie Appleby ridden by William Buick were joint favourites at 3/1. Bow Echo trained by George Boughey and ridden by Billy Loughnane was best of the rest at 9/2 after a successful and unbeaten juvenile career which culminated in a victory in the Royal Lodge Stakes over the same course and distance.

The pre race picture had changed since the spring, with the horse prominently featured in the ante post market, Puerto Rico rerouted to contest the French 2,000 Guineas, while Gstaad was supplemented to represent Ballydoyle at Newmarket.

There was some straggle in the first few furlongs with Into The Sky prominent toward the far side as Gstaad sat comfortably toward the center, with Distant Storm moving into contention with just over two furlongs to run and Bow Echo settling in at the rear moving nicely towards the stands’ side.

As the two groups had come together Gstaad battled momentarily on the lead just inside the last quarter mile but Bow Echo got going and took up the running well over a furlong out from home before drawing away readily to beat Gstaad two lengths three quarters with Distant Storm a length eight back in third, with 18/1 shot Into The Sky fourth.

The victory was an opening Classic success for 20-year-old Loughnane and George Boughey’s second British Classic after Cachet’s 1000 Guineas success in 2022 and an emotional success for the executors of Bow Echo’s deceased owner and breeder Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum who had died last December. Loughnane described ‘finding a horse of his calibre at this age as ‘a dream come true”.
